If you live in unincorporated Orange County, you might need a permit from the County’s Zoning Division before you remove that tree.

For residential property, a tree removal permit is required if:

• Property is over 2 acres with a home
• Property is vacant, regardless of size

For commercial property, a tree removal permit is almost always required.

Now, if your tree just needs a good haircut, we recommend calling in a pro. An arborist is a specialist when it comes to tree care, and it’s best to hire one who’s certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). This means they’ve had training and keep up with best practices.

A few tips for hiring a good arborist:

• Make sure they have workers’ comp insurance and check whether they need any local or state permits or licenses.
• Steer clear of anyone who says they “top” trees — that’s not a recommended practice and can harm your tree.
• Get at least two written proposals so you can compare.
• Don’t hesitate to ask for and check their references — proper tree care is an investment that can really pay off in the long run.
