Can I build an ADU in my backyard if I am on a septic tank? How does the unit get electricity?

    Hey Stephanie,

You’ll need to ensure the ADU meets your property’s setbacks and determine what capacity your septic tank has. If the ADU would push your septic needs over the existing capacity you may need another system or to expand your existing septic system. Regarding electrical, a separate electrical meter may be needed: Sec. 38-1426.2.c.15 A detached accessory dwelling unit may apply for and obtain a separate power meter, subject to the approval of the utility company and complying with all applicable laws, ordinances and regulations. An attached accessory dwelling unit shall not have or obtain a separate power meter.
