Scam Alert

The Orange County Consumer Protection Office wants to alert residents of a mailer that is being circulated in several communities. The advertisement promotes Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) financing for home energy improvements, including modifications to or installation of solar panels, impact doors and windows, air conditioning systems, and roofing.

Please be aware: Orange County Government does not authorize PACE programs for residential home improvements.

Before signing any agreement, it is important to understand the risks. With PACE financing, the payments for home improvements are added to your property tax bill, creating a voluntary tax lien on your property, which can have priority over existing mortgages.

If you do not make the payments, the amount may become delinquent property taxes. This can lead to penalties, additional fees, and ultimately the loss of your home through a tax deed sale, where your property could be sold to pay the debt.
